Geek-Out 2.0 – Music Festival love

I’m very excited to share with you that this summer I’m doing something very cool, semi-stressful, and so OUT of my norm but I’m so ready for it! This post is just a little background on how for the past two years I’ve been attending the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE. This year, though, I’m not going to just be attending, I’ll be volunteering my time while at the festival! It’s a pretty sweet deal that after you complete your hours you’re allowed to get your deposit back that you so generously paid for at the beginning. I’ll take that, thank you very much!

So far things have been a little rocky because the festival is SO new! It’s small scale Lolla, Coachella, Bonnaroo, so hopefully in a few more years this can rival the others. The festival is getting there and they’ve had pretty good bands so far play so I’m definitely optimistic. The coordination of those that run the festival? Eh, not so much…last year I only went one day which was kind-of a disaster, so I’d like to share with you a little from my past experiences! When my festivities are complete I’m going to try and post a Geek-Out 2.5 to share my volunteer experience! So, let’s dive in….shall we?

First Year:

I really had no idea what to expect! I was so excited that my friend was going to join me! I’ve been DYINGGGGGG to go to Coachella, but Coachella is MUCHO dinero that I really need to save for, so that’ll be on hold basically until I become a real adult and save. For now, I’ll stick with the East Coast semi-version. Also a bonus, Firefly is in DE….I live outside of Philadelphia, so this actually is not a very long journey…well when there’s not traffic. OMG WE’LL GET TO THAT! Anyway, the things that really sucked about this is I’m a major germ-freak and not having functioning running water, flushing toilets, washing my hands….it was intense and I had to have fun and not think about the thousands of diseases I could possibly get. Camping also sucked because I need noise to sleep…white noise, not in I’m gonna pay attention to everything and never fall asleep, because that happened the first night and then I had to sleep in my car the second night. Third night I was able to shower/sleep/wash in peace.

Bands I got to see:

The Killers | Jack White | The Black Keys | John Legend | Girl Talk | Modest Mouse | Silversun Pickups | Cake | Lupe Fiasco | Tine Tempah | Fitz & the Tantrums | AWOLNation | BassNectar

SOOOOO overall a pretty successful first year and the following year, last year, had an AMAZING LINEUP as well but sadly I couldn’t find anybody to go the full weekend with so I did just the opening day. HOOOOOOOOMG it was…. yeah.

Second Year:

Now I was going because the TWO performers I was dying to see were playing on the opening day so I figured that was the best bet. Stupidly my friend and I had left a bit later than expected and OMG THE TRAFFIC! Basically my daily experience with the festival that year was spent in a car for the majority of the time. It was exhausting. I was PISSED! Like MEGA, ULTRA, HULK-SMASH PISSED! Again, I live outside of Philly sooooo it usually takes around 2.5 hours to get down to Delaware pending traffic/construction.

and like half of them were spent 6 miles from the festival grounds. OKAY DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT DID TO US! I had missed The Neighborhood whom I was soooo stoked to see–forget that! They went on at 1245 and we weren’t close. SO that was a bust. But Ellie Goulding was going on at 6pm so we still had time.

NOPE!

My friend and I FINALLY were able to park and we practically RAN to get into the grounds and I could hear her singing from far away and my soul was crying. ELLIE! SHE WAS ON AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO WITNESS THE WHOLE THING! It was a really emotional time because we had started our drive at a little before 11am and it was now after 6pm and we were JUST getting there! All the sunscreen I brought was a joke because the sun was basically setting at this point. I did get to see her for a few songs and THANKFULLY SHE SANG MY FAVORITE: I NEED YOUR LOVE w/ Calvin Harris. Well it was her version, he wasn’t with her which was another let down because he was playing like 2 hours after her so that was kinda eh…really?

So see? I STILL love that song, Ellie is my girl so I’m glad I got to see a little of her. I met up with a family friend, got my chipwich ice cream sandwich and was happy. Barely stayed for the last band which was a great idea because when we walked back….we couldn’t find my car. WE LEFT IN SUCH A RUSH WE NEVER REMEMBERED WHERE WE PARKED! We walked up and down ALLL of the aisles of cars and heard all types of key locks and alarms going off, how could you tell them apart? Well after….
