Oh my god it’s been FOR-EVERRRRR but finally have put together my post-NYCC thoughts and I’m ready to report on my first comic con experience!
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 Captain America-stars
Okay, so let it be known this is an image heavy post and I’m going to review as best to my experience/knowledge as I can.
Let me start by saying that this is my first comic con of ANY kind and I had seriously high expectations. I mean I was expecting levels of this:
I’ve followed SDCC religiously for like five years now, which amateur by most, but to me who lives on the east coast, never tried to attend, never had anyone to go, non-existent funds–this was probably never going to happen which was why I usually lived vicariously through others who I have online friendships with and most media sites that cover the insanity that is San Diego Comic Con.
Earlier this year I did try and score passes but wasn’t able to, not that I thought I had much of a shot anyway. Personally as someone who would love to experience it, I think it’s kinda shady that people who attend the year before get an early-bird chance to go the following year. It doesn’t free up space for newbies, like myself, to get the chance to. Not everyone can afford every year and, yes, this particular Con is like thee Mecca of Cons but I still hope for one day it happening. The thing that was super disheartening was it was in New York City and this specific city usually has ALL the goods and there weren’t as many popular fandoms I was hoping to have panels or discussions about focused here.
Hunger Games – Mockingjay Pt. 2 November release date …where were they?
Star Wars: the Force Awakens December release date …where were they?
The Walking Dead ACTUALLY premiered in MSG, just a mile or so away from the Javits Convention Center…yet no Walking Dead panel
Sherlock Christmas Special has a December release date …where were they?
Victor Frankenstein has a November release date …where were they?
Spectre (not sure if Bond falls into Comic Con…but I wouldn’t say Pretty Little Liars does either, which was DEFINITELY there, so idk, but I’d rather that represented than PLL) has a November release date …where were they?
The 5th Wave has a January release date …where were they?
Deadpool has a February release …where were they?
Batman vs. Superman and Allegiant have March release dates and where were these early promotions?
Pretty much all of these mentioned were at SDCC in July of 2015, but they have upcoming release dates a couple of months after NYCC and you’re telling me none of these were apparently not available? That’s where I got my hopes up and was severely let down. New York City is an epic city that usually gets the hookup and it was clearly missing during their Comic Con.
I’m not completely bashing it because I definitely got to see some really cool stuff. I’ve expanded into the comic world more, so I ended up getting more excited to see my favorite comic and graphic novel artists and authors I’m currently reading than anything film/TV-wise. For all the geekdom I have immersed myself into all these years there’s still a bunch I have not gotten into so certain things were out based on that alone.
Overall it was pretty decent for my first go at a Con. Definitely wished there was more stuff I was into and more I had been looking forward to attending, but it is what it is. Who knows what 2016 has in store for me but I’m ready for all the fandom things!
